What you'll need

Ingredients

Pie crust

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup ice water

Apple filling

  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (e.g., Granny Smith, Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Finishing

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for sprinkling)

Directions

STEP 1

In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs

STEP 2

Gradually add ice water, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide into two discs, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour

STEP 3

Roll out one disc to fit the pie dish and place it in the bottom. Keep the second disc refrigerated

STEP 4

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C)

STEP 5

In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are coated

STEP 6

Pour the apple filling into the prepared pie crust

STEP 7

Roll out the second disc and place it over the filling. Seal and crimp the edges

STEP 8

Cut slits on the top crust for venting. Optionally, brush with an egg wash and sprinkle sugar

STEP 9

Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly

STEP 10

Allow to cool before slicing
